What is RSVP?
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) helps
individuals age 55 and older put their skills and life experience to work for
their communities. RSVP volunteers serve from a few hours to twenty hours a
week. They do just about everything -- from tutoring teens and renovating homes,
to planting gardens and programming computers. However, they choose to serve,
RSVP volunteers meet community needs and make a lasting difference.
Today, more than 600 seniors participate in RSVP,
and you can be a part of this family of caring volunteers that is solving
problems and bringing our communities together.
Why Do RSVP Volunteers Get
Involved?
Some people feel a lack of productivity when they no
longer have a regular work site or schedule. RSVP helps seniors stay active and
involved. Volunteers join a large service network, learning new skills or using
the know how they've developed over a lifetime.
Many RSVP volunteers have lived in their
communities for a long time. Because the community has given them so much,
they see serving as a way to give something back. RSVP volunteers discover that
when they give, they gain alot too. Studies show that seniors who volunteer live
longer, healthier and more fulfilling lives.
What Do RSVP Volunteers Do?
RSVP volunteers choose how and where they want to
serve. Many continue the type of work they enjoyed earlier in life, while others
try something completely different. As an RSVP volunteer, you might mentor
at-risk youth, make hospital visits, teach English to immigrants, organize
neighborhood watch groups, or help people recover from natural disasters.
You may commit to serving in one or more ongoing
efforts. The number of hours you serve is flexible. You will receive a
pre-service orientation, followed by appropriate on-the-job training from the
agency or organization where you are placed. While on duty, you will also
receive supplemental insurance.
Can I be a Volunteer?
RSVP Volunteers must meet the below criteria:
-
Volunteers are 55 years of age or older
-
Volunteers should invest a few hours each year
-
Volunteers must enjoy working with others to
solve community problems
Today's older adults are busy, productive people.
After retirement, many RSVP volunteers use their experience to tutor and mentor
children, counsel small businesses, assist at health clinics and teach other
seniors to use the Internet. Others distribute food to their town's homeless or
volunteer at a variety of one-time community events. They want to keep active in
ways that make a difference for those in need.
